The Art League of Rhode Island, a statewide non-profit organization that promotes the visual arts and artists in Rhode Island, announces its 11th annual meeting on June 21, 2011 at the Metcalf Auditorium of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum’s Chace Center in Providence. The election of officers and the introduction of new artist members will be followed by presentations from two nationally acclaimed guest artists. Work by the new artist members will be on display, and a slide presentation of League artist members will be shown. The event is open to the public; admission is free to Art League members; admission for non-members is $20.

Founded in 2000, the League was the first organization in the state dedicated to promoting and showcasing the wide and impressive range of visual artists in the state, bringing a wide range of artists, to the attention of the public by a series of exhibitions and publications and encouraging public participation and exploration of art and artists in Rhode Island through lectures, performances, and public programs. Now in its second decade, the League is preparing to embark on planning and goals for the future. The evening’s guest speakers, photographer Salvatore Mancini and artist Coral Bourgeois, exemplify the diversity of Rhode Island artistic talent that the League seeks to actively encourage and promote.

Italian-born Salvatore Mancini came to the United States in 1952 and grew up in Knightsville, a part of Cranston, R.I. The subjects of his photography range from religious festivals to urban archaelogy to forests and ancient petroglyphs. His work has been published and exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and he has been the recipient of the awards and honors including the Pell Award and the Bolaffi Prize, Italy’s most prestigious photography award.

Coral Bourgeois, recently featured at the New Works exhibition at the Newport Art Museum, creates colorful, large-scale works incorporating wood, ceramic, painting, printed images, jewelry findings, beads, and epoxy resin. Her mixed media tiles, assembled in grid patterns result in mural-size installations reflecting her background as a painter and jewelry artist. Bourgeois’ work has been featured in diverse public and private collections including restaurants, hotels, and hospitals from New York to Istanbul and Boston to Las Vegas.

All League members and anyone wishing to learn more about the League are encouraged to attend this important event and take part in the League’s new initiatives for the future. Anyone wishing to join as an associate member of the League will be able to so at the event.

The Art League of Rhode Island’s 11th Annual Meeting, June 21, 2011, 5.30 pm, Metcalf Auditorium at the RISD Museum’s Chace Center, North Main Street, Providence, R.I. Admission: free to members; general public $20.
